Daily care allowance insurance

Daily care allowance insurance (Pflegetagegeldversicherung)

Pflegetagegeldversicherung

Protect yourself with daily care allowance insurance

When you require care, you often have to pay thousands of euros per month out of pocket, as statutory coverage is rarely sufficient. A daily care allowance insurance closes the gap between public coverage and the actual costs. It is best to secure your private daily care allowance while you are still young and healthy. This helps avoid exclusions or risk surcharges due to pre-existing conditions and saves money with lower premiums.

Private care provision is extremely important

The insurance provider pays you a fixed daily amount once you require outpatient or inpatient care. As a policyholder, you choose the daily benefit amount at the time of contract signing. The daily rate is structured according to care levels, with the maximum benefit provided at care level 5.

Customer-friendly providers pay regardless of whether you require professional care in a nursing home or are cared for at home by relatives or mobile services.

Subsidised daily nursing care insurance (geförderte Pflegetagegeldversicherung)

Highly recommended to supplement statutory care insurance

In older age, everyone faces the fundamental risk of needing long-term care. Already, over two million Germans are classified as needing care. While statutory care insurance exists to cover outpatient or nursing home care costs, its benefits are often far from sufficient.

For example, a nursing home place may cost around €3,000 per month, yet even in the “best” case, the care recipient must pay about half of that themselves. By taking out a state-subsidized supplementary care insurance, you can protect yourself and any dependent relatives from these out-of-pocket costs.

Protection through government-supported daily care allowance insurance

For some time now, it has been possible to bridge the gap between statutory care insurance benefits and actual costs with a private supplementary care insurance. This insurance has become more attractive in recent years because the government contributes a monthly subsidy of €5, commonly known as the “Pflege-Bahr”.

To qualify for this subsidy, several conditions must be met:

  • The insured must belong to either social or private long-term care insurance.

  • They must be 18 years or older.

  • They must not currently be receiving long-term care benefits nor have previously received them.

To receive the €5 monthly state subsidy (€60 per year), a minimum monthly premium of €10 for the eligible plan is required (€120 annually).

Important note: “Pflege-Bahr” plans do not always offer the best terms compared to other daily care allowance tariffs on the market. Therefore, always carefully review all offers. If a standard daily care allowance insurance is not available due to health reasons, the “Pflege-Bahr” plans are usually the alternative solution.
